Have you reached first base or do you feel like you have hit a home run? If you are happy sliding into the bases that life has to offer, then that for some is the same as hitting a home run for others.

I think I have had a few of both because it really is the way I look at it. This is all based on a perception that hitting a home run is awesome, but then again sliding into a base is exciting and you don’t know if you are safe until life says you are.

The home runs in life are getting the big things done and feeling like you have won against all odds. I was always told by teachers that because I am dyslexic and struggled at school that I wouldn’t amount to anything. What is that ‘anything’ they were talking about, because hey, that ‘anything’ has turned out pretty cool for me. I hit a home run and now I sit and look back on a fast and furious life loved and lived to the full.

There is not much I haven’t done and tried. What those teachers didn’t realise with all their negative comments about me not being able to fulfil a job, well I have become an entrepreneur and wow, in my eyes that has been a pure home run. I am living my dreams and doing so many things because of it. I have had a great chance to prove them all wrong. I wish they could see me now. The hurt and shame for most of my school life is impossible to imagine now, but there were definitely other plans for me.

I look back and realise that getting to first base was surviving the ridicule and comments. First base was my first important lesson that I learnt in life and that is not to let anyone steal my thunder. I rose above all the negative comments. I have become who I am because of that, but I certainly won’t give them any credit for that. What I can say is that there is a lesson for everyone and this is it: live your life to the best of your ability.

I get up every day wanting to make others shine and realise that they can have the life they want.

My message to you is clear: This is your life and you only get one, so make it all you want it to be. Surround yourself with people who will add value to it. You need to do this with as little fear as possible because that way you will take a few chances and it will keep the excitement in your life - something that will always motivate you.

Be prepared to get a little dirty when you come sliding into those life bases because not everything is easy. But with practice, you will eventually hit that home run. Let it be when you are ready to swing at life with all the courage of your convictions.

Let all the negative comments and things that have happened to you push you forwards and not hold you back. Prove the right people wrong!
